Why Your Symptoms Get Worse Before Your Period

For many women, the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle can amplify unresolved emotional patterns, insecure attachment dynamics, and nervous system activation.

As your period approaches, you may notice increasing tension in your body, a stronger identification with your inner critic, hot-and-cold feelings toward your partner, disrupted sleep, heightened emotional overwhelm, increasing energetic sensitivity, or a constant sense of being on edge.

The luteal phase doesn't create these patterns —it makes them more visible. Feelings that may have been quietly held beneath the surface now rise and invite us to pay attention. And this is where our work together begins.

STEP 1

We begin by tracking your menstrual cycle alongside your nervous system, emotions, relationships, and inner experience. Together we identify the patterns that emerge during your luteal phase and begin approaching them with curiosity rather than fear.

STEP 2

Together, we work with your nervous system to gently unwind patterns of fight, flight, freeze, and fawning while building tools for regulation and grounding. We also explore how different phases of your cycle affect your emotional and relational experience, including working with symbolic patterns, inner imagery, and deeper layers of your inner world as they emerge.

STEP 3

As protective patterns soften, your luteal phase can begin to feel emotionally and physically lighter. We begin to focus on pleasure, nourishment, and internal resources. You may notice your symptoms soften in intensity and a deeper sense of empowerment grows over time.
